Earlier this morning, Mi7’s Control Room received a report from a community crime group in the Chase Valley area. A vigilant resident had spotted two men walking near a residential complex carrying multiple steel guardrails, typically used as safety barriers on roads and freeways.
Mi7 Reaction Officers were dispatched immediately. On arrival, teams observed four men carrying guardrails, appearing to be in the process of removing them from the area. When approached, two suspects fled, while the other two were intercepted and detained on site. Additional Mi7 units, including members of the Specialised Threat Response Unit (STRU), responded to assist.
It was established that the suspects had allegedly been stealing the guardrails from the N3 highway at Chase Valley. It is believed they had been stripping and stockpiling the items since the weekend, and had recruited two others from the Pietermaritzburg CBD to assist with moving them. One suspect was wearing a roadworks company uniform to appear legitimate.
Verification with the company confirmed the suspect was a former employee who had failed to return his uniform after termination.
The matter was handed over to the police for further investigation.
We applaud the community member whose quick reporting enabled officers to respond and make the arrests.
