Protest outside Maponya Mall following the tragic death of an e-hailing driver

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is aware of a protest by approximately 300 community members outside Maponya Mall today, following the tragic death of an e-hailing driver yesterday.

Police units from the South African Police Service (SAPS), National Traffic, Gauteng Traffic, and JMPD are on the scene.

The protesters have requested to be addressed by the mall’s management. The situation remains calm and is under police control. As a precaution, Chris Hani Road between Marula Street and Mokoena Street has been closed, and Maponya Mall is currently not open to the public.

We urge residents to avoid the area if possible and use alternative routes.
