Reabona Secondary School beams at the Dr KK Road Safety Debates

The Dr Kenneth Kaunda District has displayed exceptional talent at the Road Safety Debate Competition which took place in Wolmaransstad on Wednesday. Giving the adjudicators a challenging task with the scoring, the performance standard was raised to perfection.

Albeit a tight competition, Reabona Secondary School representing Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, gave Sarafina and Prestige Secondary Schools a run for their money. Sarafina landed the second position and Prestige came in third, representing the municipalities of JB Marks and City of Matlosana respectively.

The Department of Community Safety and Transport Management through this flagship programme, provides a platform for learners to sharpen their research and presentation abilities as they engage on matters of road safety.

The Dr KK District Manager for Road Safety, Ms Selloane Tsoeute, deliberated on the challenging aspects that learners encounter as part of the preparation for the competition.

“The subject matter provided to learners may sound easy, but as they conduct their research they discover the difficulty that comes with it.

“Despite the difficulty, they were able to rise to the challenge and by undergoing the self teaching process, they became our teachers. Today we have learned from them by virtue of listening to their arguments. As much as this might not be considered a basic service delivery component, it remains key in the livelihood of our communities,” said Tsoeute.

A young learner from the winning team, by the name of Karabo Dipitso, was elated by her team’s performance and most importantly grateful for the experience.

“I could say that I am now a completely different person because of this experience. It was tough, nerve wrecking but I’m grateful because it taught me that I can achieve anything that I put my focus on.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to learn about responsible road use. I used to think that accidents happen because of reckless motorists but I now understand that road users have a shared responsibility, this includes pedestrians and passengers,” she said.

Reabona Secondary School will be representing the district for the battle of the provincial champions in September.
