On Tuesday 26 August 2025, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) female Officers, in conjunction with female Officers from National Traffic Police (NTP), South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Department of Home Affairs Immigration and other stakeholders, steered an integrated Women’s Month Operation in the Brakpan area.
The three (3) phased operation resulted in the arrests of six (6) suspects between the ages of twenty-two (22) and forty-two (42) years, as well as seventeen (17) minibus taxi’s being impounded.
The first phase took place on Ergo Road, where Officers stopped and searched 444 vehicles, checked for compliance on public transport, as well as assessed driver and vehicle fitness. The Officers impounded seventeen (17) minibus taxis, that failed to comply with the National Road Traffic Act and took them to Benoni pound for safekeeping.
The second phase of the operation was conducted in the Tsakane area, where the EMPD Speed Unit Officers arrested two (2) suspects for exceeding the speed limit in a 60 kilometres zone. The other four (4) suspects were arrested for not having any form of identification by the Immigration Officers.
The last phase focused on spaza shops and liquor outlets, where Officers visited two (2) liquor outlets that were noncompliant and liquor worth six thousand Rand (R6000) was confiscated. The Department of City Planning, further issued four (4) notices and one notice was issued by the Department of Environmental Health, to various outlets in the area, and confiscated food not fit for human consumption, with an estimated value of one thousand five hundred Rand (R1500) was confiscated.
The arrested suspects were detained at Tsakane Police Station and they are expected to appear before a relevant Magistrate’s court soon.
