The 2025 Festival of Motoring media day delivered an impressive showcase of automotive innovation. Multiple manufacturers revealed their latest offerings to the market. From electric vehicles (EV) to hybrids (HEV) and ICE vehicles, it highlighted the industry’s diverse approach to meeting evolving consumer demands.
Versatile BAIC B30
BAIC revealed their B30, a stylish SUV designed to bridge the gap for South African drivers who demand both city-friendly manoeuvrability and the ruggedness needed for escaping to the countryside. Inside, the B30 promises a high-tech and luxurious cabin typically reserved for higher segments.
The B30 will launch in South Africa with four distinct variants, offering consumers flexibility in both performance and budget.
- Two versions feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 138kW of power.
- There are also two hybrid variants, which combine the same petrol engine with electric motors.
- The flagship AWD hybrid model delivers a combined 301kW of power.
Pricing starts at approximately R550 000 for entry-level variants. The flagship AWD hybrid comes in around R700 000.
BYD Dolphin Surf teased
BYD provided a preview of the upcoming Dolphin Surf, a compact electric vehicle designed specifically for urban environments. This newcomer is part of BYD’s strategy to also make electric vehicle ownership more accessible to South African consumers. It combines proven EV technology with a more affordable, city-focused package.
The Dolphin Surf is intended to deliver style, intelligence, and sustainable credentials found in BYD’s larger models in a bite-sized format – perfect for urban life. Their objective is to make EV ownership affordable, accessible, and genuinely enjoyable for more South Africans.
Chery Smart Hybrid Range
Chery showcased their hybrid technology with the latest Chery Smart Hybrid (CSH) lineup:
- Tiggo 7 CSH
- Tiggo 8 CSH
- All-new flagship Tiggo 9 CSH combines advanced PHEV technology with performance and efficiency. Available in two variants
- FWD Pinnacle CSH featuring an 18.3 kWh battery pack, delivering a combined output of 280 kW and 610 Nm of torque, with an all-electric range of up to 90km.
- AWD Vanguard CSH Tiggo 9 has a larger 34.4 kWh battery, producing 455 kW and 920 Nm. It extends the all-electric range to 160km. Both variants have a total driving range of up to 1 400km. Claimed fuel consumption is as low as 1.4-1.5L/100 km.
The presentation emphasized the range’s hybrid performance capabilities, impressive efficiency figures, and advanced safety features.
Three bold new GAC models
GAC unveiled a trio of new models:
- Emzoom Nova
It delivers performance and accessibility. Powered by a turbocharged 1.5TG engine producing 130 kW and 270 Nm, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, it balances city agility with open-road performance. It features a refreshed exterior design while the interior features an array of modern technology. Claimed fuel consumption is 6.2L/100 km. The starting price is R359 900 with a lifetime engine warranty and a 2-year/30 000 km service plan.
- PHEV M8 Master
Arriving in Q4 2025, the M8 Master is GAC’s new flagship MPV, designed as a premium mobile lounge. It combines a 2.0T GDI engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission and advanced plug-in hybrid system. The total driving range is 1 032km. The 25.57 kWh battery and petrol engine to produce a combined 274 kW of power and 630 Nm of torque. It has 0-100 km/h acceleration of 8.8 seconds. The interior features Semi-Aniline Nappa leather seating, captain’s chairs, and cutting-edge driver assistance features.
- All-electric Aion Y
The fully electric Aion Y, also launching in Q4 2025, has a 63.2 kWh battery delivering up to 490km of NEDC range. The electric motor produces 150 kW and 225 Nm. Features include L2 driving assistance, panoramic sunroof, hidden door handles, angel wings LED headlights, and a 14.6-inch infotainment screen.
iCAUR makes South African debut
iCAUR featured two distinctive fully electric SUVs at its debut: the 03T and V23. Each offers unique experiences and electric performance.
The 03T is an urban crossover with a wide-body SUV design. It features innovative aluminium construction.
The V23 draws inspiration from robust, retro designs while offering adaptable interiors and mechanical controls. Drivers can select between 24 interchangeable pieces, making each V23 their own customised version reflecting their personal style.
Both models deliver up to 500km of all-electric range with all-wheel-drive capability.
Three new models for LDV
LDV South Africa officially launched three new models targeting distinct market segments:
The Terron 9
This vehicle combines rugged capability with refined comfort. Powered by a 2.5-liter turbo-diesel engine delivering 163kW and 520Nm through an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. With 4×4 capability and a class-leading 3 500kg towing capacity, it offers exceptional versatility. The interior features dual digital displays, leather upholstery, and advanced safety systems, earning a 5-star ANCAP rating. Price starting from R699 900.
The D90
The D90 focuses on family comfort with seven seats, heated and ventilated massage seats, driver assistance and multiple differential locks. Features include a panoramic sunroof, 20-inch diamond-cut alloys, electrically operated tailgate, 360-degree camera, and dual wireless charging pads. Price starting from R799 900.
The Deliver 9
This commercial vehicle targets users with massive cargo volume and payload capacity. It features 236-degree rear-opening barn doors, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, and comprehensive safety systems. Starting from R699 900.
OMODA & JAECOO: expand lineup
OMODA & JAECOO strengthened their South African presence with the reveal of the J5 and preview of the C7, both showcasing advanced SHS plug-in hybrid technology.
The JAECOO J5 is a compact, trendy SUV with elegant exterior styling and high-end cabin finishes. Powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine across three trim levels (Vortex, Glacier, and Inferno), the J5 brings luxury features like alloy wheels, leather upholstery, and power-operated front seats to the mainstream segment.
The OMODA C7, slotting between the popular C5 and luxurious C9, offers both conventional petrol and efficient SHS plug-in hybrid variants. The hybrid version produces combined outputs of 255 kW and 525 Nm with approximately 1 200km of combined driving range. Features include heated and ventilated front seats plus passenger seat massage function.
Sixth-Generation Subaru Forester
Subaru launched the sixth generation of their all-new 2025 Forester,. It is intended to be a mark of their most successful model. The new Forester features a bolder stance with a stronger grille, compact LED headlights, and Subaru’s latest star-cluster emblem. Muscular wheel arches emphasize its rugged credentials, while a fresh colour palette provides modern appeal.
Every Forester is powered by Subaru’s signature 2.5-liter BOXER engine, producing 136kW and 247Nm, paired with a Lineartronic CVT featuring an 8-step manual mode with paddle shifts.
TATA launches comprehensive Range
TATA’s re-entry into the South African market was marked by the launch of four new models spanning different segments, all emphasising segment-leading safety, modern design, and accessible pricing.
- The Tiago is a stylish compact hatchback with dual-tone design, reverse camera, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
- The Punch offers SUV stance in a compact frame with 187mm ground clearance and innovative 90-degree opening doors.
- The Curvv presents a futuristic coupe-SUV design with panoramic sunroof, gesture controls, premium Harman audio, and wireless charging.
- The Harrier provides luxury and space with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), 360-degree cameras, and construction based on the Land Rover Omega platform.
Volkswagen launches performance and practicality
Volkswagen presented several models headlined by the new Golf 8 GTI, which blends high performance with cutting-edge technology.
