36-year-old parolee arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm

MTHATHA – The OR Tambo District Stock theft Prevention Task Team once again in their operational successes arrested a 36-year-old male suspect of Lwandlana locality, Tabase A/A – Mthatha on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, at about 22:00 for possession of an unlicensed firearm (erased serial number) with two (02) live rounds of ammunition.

The task team had a search warrant and on its execution at the suspect’s homestead, a 9mm Norincho pistol was recovered, and it transpired that the 36-year-old male suspect was released on parole in September 2024 after Stock theft conviction. He was detained at Mthatha Central Police Station and is due to appear before Mthatha Magistrate Court on Thursday, 25 September 2025, on charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“Recovery of unlicensed firearms in the villages and streets of our district confirm our commitment in ensuring safety and secure environment for all”, said OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana as he applauded the Task Team on its success in recovering the firearm and arresting the suspect for everyone to feel safe in our district.
