WELKOM – Collaboration between the Welkom K9 Unit and private security has led to the arrest of five suspects, aged between 32 and 65, following the discovery of copper cables in the vehicle they were traveling in.
It is alleged that on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, members received information from SOG Security about a vehicle transporting suspected stolen copper. Investigations revealed that occupants of a cream Toyota Corolla attempted to sell copper cables to a local scrap yard but failed. Information was operationalised. The vehicle was traced and stopped after the driver attempted to flee from the scene at the Welkom Industrial area. Permission to search the vehicle was requested and granted. Upon searching the vehicle police discovered bags containing copper cables. The five occupants of the vehicle failed to provide a reasonable explanation for being in possession of the copper.
Police seized 50kg of copper cables with an estimated value of R8260 and a Toyota Corolla alleged to be used in the commission of crime.
Five male suspects, aged between 32 and 65, were subsequently arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court soon.
