Man arrested with unlicensed firearm while others caught in the act of illegal mining during Vala Umgodi operation

Vala Umgodi Operators have intensified efforts to dismantle illegal mining operations in the Lejweleputswa area. Over the past week, joint operations with mine security led to the arrest of more than 80 suspects and the confiscation of significant illegal mining equipment and materials.

​On Tuesday, 09 September 2025, proactive team members and private security conducted a disruptive patrol in Virginia. Two men, aged 47 and 37, were arrested at a crusher plant after they were found in possession of gold-bearing material.

​Later that same day, a special underground operation uncovered and disarmed several “cement bombs.” The team arrested three illegal miners at the scene and discovered another illegal plant. Following a continued search, three more illegal miners were apprehended, while others fled. The team confiscated illegal mining equipment and food supplies.

​On Wednesday, 10 September 2025, police acted on a tip about a smelting house in Welkom. They swiftly arrested two undocumented men, aged 26 and 25, who were in the process of illegally smelting gold. Gold-bearing material and smelting equipment were confiscated.

​Later that day, the roving team conducted duties around the G-Hostel in Thabong, where they found and seized abandoned illegal mining equipment, including crucible cups, bowls, and oxygen cylinders.

​On Thursday, 11 September 2025, a male suspect was arrested at a mine premise in Theunissen for possessing gold nuggets and gold-bearing material. He was also charged with contravening the Mine Health and Safety Act.

​On Saturday, 13 September 2025, an intelligence-led operation in Odendaalsrus resulted in the arrest of three illegal foreign nationals, aged 42 and 34, at an informal settlement in K10, Kutlwanong. The team discovered an unlicensed firearm hidden in a shack.

​The South African Police Service remains committed to combating illegal mining activities and will continue to work with partners to ensure the safety and security of the communities.
