Multiple suspects nabbed during the week-long Operation Shanela II in the Northern Cape

KIMBERELEY – The on-going multi-disciplinary, intelligence driven Operation Shanela II, resulted in the apprehension and arrest of 192 suspects during police actions conducted from Monday, 08 September 2025 until Sunday, 14 September 2025 across the five districts in the province.

Provincial components, districts, and stations executed joint operations during this period to strengthen the local policing capacity at stations.

During vehicle check points and roadblocks conducted, 6548 persons and 3436 vehicles were stopped and searched.

The multi-disciplinary teams and the detectives also traced and arrested wanted suspects for an array of crimes.

The suspects were arrested for crimes including contravening the Firearms Control Act, illegal possession of firearms, illegal possession of explosives, contact crimes, property related crimes and drugs related crimes during self-initiated actions by the police.

Illicit mining operations were also conducted in the greater Kleinsee area on 11 September 2025 focusing on dismantling illegal mining activities in the Namakwa District. These actions were executed under the auspices of Operation Vala Umgodi and saw the arrest of a 46-year-old male for unpolished diamonds.

Compliance inspections were conducted at numerous second-hand goods dealers, firearm dealers, informal businesses and liquor outlets, which resulted in the closure of 20 unlicensed liquor outlets.

During the disruptive actions, police confiscated drugs, dangerous weapons and a significant amount of liquor.

In addition, Stations conducted Gender Based Violence and Femicide awareness campaigns in conjunction with Community policing structures and external stakeholders.

A school in Kuruman was visited, and SAPS members engaged with learners and also executed raids for dangerous weapons and drugs.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major General (Dr) Thabo Mphuthi reassured communities that the police would continue to stamp down the authority of the state during these multi-disciplinary operations, and those who commit or intend to commit crime will be arrested and face the full might of the law.
