Suspect found in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition

CAPE TOWN – Targeted operations to fight gang violence and gather intelligence into organised crime yielded positive results when police members arrested suspects for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition on Friday night.

Members of Operation Shanela II received information about a person who is in possession of a firearm and the location and description of the suspect was given. The members followed up the information in the Covid informal settlement and the suspect fitting the description was apprehended. They found a 9mm pistol with ammunition in his possession. The 34-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Furthermore, the members stopped and searched a male on the corner of Hindle and Saxdown Roads, Mfuleni, and arrested a 43-year-old male when they found an imitation firearm, eight blank rounds and two rounds of ammunition in his possession. It is believed that the suspect is using the weapon to commit crime. He faces a charge for the illegal possession of ammunition and the possession of an imitation firearm.

Once charged the suspects will make their court appearances in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ court, respectively.
