VIERFONTEIN – An intelligence-driven operation led to the arrest of two suspects, aged 33 and 30, for possession of gold-bearing material.
On Friday, 26 September 2025, at about 22:00, the Fezile Dabi District Trio Task Team and Sasolburg Crime Intelligence, received information about illegal mining at Kopanong Mine. The members swiftly followed the information, which led them to Mine Shaft 9, where the two suspects were apprehended in possession of gold-bearing materials and were found to be without any legal documentation to be in South Africa.
The gold-bearing material, estimated to be worth R80 000.00, was confiscated. The pair is expected to appear before the Viljoenskroon Magistrate’s Court soon, on charges of possession of gold-bearing material.
