WESTERN CAPE – The endeavours of Anti-Gang Unit to bring stability to crime ridden areas proved fruitful as indicated by the arrests of suspects for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, murder and dealing in drugs respectively.
On Friday, 17 October 2025 at about 15:30, the members were deployed in Bishop Lavis area to combat and prevent the escalating gang violence between rival street gangs including tracing of wanted persons.
They acted on information received of illegal firearms and drugs at a premises in Vygie Street, Bishop Lavis. Upon their arrival, three males were sitting outside the premises and when noticing the police, one of the men started running carrying a green plastic bag. The 23-year-old suspect was pursued on foot and apprehended, inside the plastic bag members found a 9mm firearm and 25 rounds of ammunition. He was charged for the possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. Back at the premises the other two males, aged 28 and 38 were arrested on a Bishop Lavis murder case.
Members followed up further information of drugs being distributed from another premises in Vygie Street, Bishop Lavis. The premises was searched and approximately 890 mandrax tablets and 69 sachets containing tik and two silver scales were found and confiscated. A 36-year-old female, was arrested for dealing in drugs.
The suspects are affiliated to a local gang and will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates court on Monday, 20 October 2025 for their mentioned charges.
