Engen, in collaboration with Tharisa Mines, is proud to announce the rollout of a cutting-edge solar power system at Marikana North High School, marking another milestone in the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and education.
The newly installed 15kW portable solar container represents the latest evolution in Engen’s solar initiative. This advanced unit features a battery backup system, ensuring uninterrupted power supply even during outages. The system will provide clean, renewable energy that reduces reliance on the national grid, lowers electricity costs, and cuts carbon emissions – while reliably powering the school’s Maths and Science laboratories to support continuous teaching and learning.
Beyond powering classrooms, the solar solution serves as a living laboratory, introducing learners to clean energy technologies and inspiring interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers.
A Long-standing Partnership with Tharisa Mines
For many years, Engen and Tharisa Mines have worked hand-in-hand to support learners at Marikana North High School. Together, they have funded matric bootcamps, distributed study guides, and provided ongoing resources to improve academic outcomes. This sustained collaboration reflects a shared commitment to uplifting the Marikana community and empowering learners with the tools needed for success.

Driving Sustainable Impact Across EMSS Centres
The Marikana North project follows recent solar installations at Durban South’s Ganges Secondary School (November 2024) and Hillview High School (February 2025), both of which host Engen Maths and Science School (EMSS) classes. Engen plans to extend this renewable energy programme to all ten of its EMSS centres nationwide.
“These projects are a remarkable blend of sustainability and STEM education,” adds Mdabula. “They reduce our environmental footprint while inspiring learners to become future engineers, scientists, and environmental leaders.”
Technical Expertise in Action
The project was spearheaded by Engen Business & Energy Solutions (EBES), whose renewable energy expertise ensured a seamless implementation.
“These portable 15kW solar containers with UPS units are compact, scalable, and efficient – ideal for schools,” says Kevin Singh, Head of EBES. “The inclusion of battery backup provides uninterrupted power to critical learning spaces such as the Maths and Science labs, enabling STEM-based initiatives like robotics and coding, and preparing learners for a technology-driven future.”
Commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
This solar rollout aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education, while also supporting Engen’s broader commitment to nine of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Empowering Education Through EMSS
Since 1987, the Engen Maths and Science School (EMSS) programme has provided free supplementary tuition in mathematics, science, and English to over 1,500 learners annually at ten centres nationwide. Classes take place every Saturday and focus on equipping learners with critical STEM skills that open pathways to tertiary studies and future careers.
