Committing crime using firearms remains a priority for SAPS. We will continue to flush criminals and illegal firearms out of our communities” said the Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie.
This follows after a robbery that took place this morning in Govan Mbeki locality in Kwadwesi. At 07:45 a 30-year-old male was robbed at gunpoint by three armed suspects in Boesak Street, Govan Mbeki. They demanded his money and then fled the scene in their getaway vehicle, a black Toyota Avanza.
At 09:00 the vehicle was spotted driving in Mbeki Avenue, Govan Mbeki by Public Order Police Unit (POP) members. Upon approaching the black Avanza, two suspects alighted from the vehicle while firing several shots at the police vehicle. The suspects then disposed of one of their firearms before fleeing again in their vehicle into a side street.
Some of the POP Unit members remained at the site where the firearm was dropped while the rest of the members followed the Avanza that has sped off. In Cele Street, one of the suspects jumped out of the Avanza and ran in between the houses. He hid his firearm in the yard of one of the houses before attempting to hide in a shack behind another house. The remaining three suspects managed to evade arrest by driving through an opening in the fence next to the R75 (Uitenhage Road) and fled from police.
The 25-year-old suspect was found and arrested by the POP Unit members and his firearm discovered and confiscated. The suspect will be appearing before the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Friday 19 October to face charges of attempted murder as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm. Charges of robbery could also be added once further invesigation also links him to the robbery.
