Police officers from the Rapid Rail Police Task Team continue with their mandate to root out all criminals involved in the theft of copper from railway lines as well as damage to essential infrastructure.
This was followed by an operation that was conducted on Monday, 25 January 2021 at 18:00, through patrols along the railway line in Chatsworth. Whilst patrolling, members received information about a suspect who is buying stolen copper cables from cable thieves. The team proceeded to Rafia Road in Chatsworth where the police found bags containing copper.
A 26-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for damage to essential infrastructure. The estimated street value of the recovered copper is R15 000-00. The suspect appeared before the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court yesterday, 26 January 2021. The matter was adjourned to 29 January 2021.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula welcomed the arrest of the suspect. “We continue to urge our communities to refrain from buying stolen goods as buying stolen property is also a crime and those found in possession of stolen goods will also be arrested,” he added.
