It’s a stunning fact that the average motorist spends 4 years of their life in their car. So, it makes sense to look after a car’s interior. Caring for your car’s interior is as vital as having regular services. A dirty interior does not provide a good impression for any occupant. Fortunately, it only takes some cleaning tips and products to keep the interior clean for a long time to come.1
Prevention is better than cure1
So, the saying goes, and it also applies to keeping the car’s interior clean. Avoid, if possible, eating fast food and drinking in your car. This is the quickest way to make the interior dirty and become full of unwanted food and trash. One way to minimise junk from collecting in your car is to have a spare plastic bag available inside, which you can empty from time to time.
Please consult your car’s owner’s manual and an official dealership if needed for cleaning advice and requirements before you do anything to your car’s interior.
How do you clean the car’s interior? 1
For some, it’s like mowing the lawn – cleaning the car provides instant gratification and motivation to continue this practice. Below are described some cleaning tips for you to follow.
Vacuum the interior1
Vacuuming your car’s interior removes the debris and clutter lying around on the floor and seats.
Cleaning floor mats1
Mats can collect mud, old chewing gum and all sorts of other deposits that need to be removed. So, remove the mats, wash them thoroughly and allow them to dry completely before returning them to the car. Avoid returning moist mats to carpeted floors to prevent any mould from growing.
Cleaning the car’s seats1
A regular carpet steamer can effectively clean cloth upholstery, but cleaning leather upholstery requires more care with special cleaning products. To prevent the leather from fading and cracking due to the sun’s destructive action, apply certain cleaning oils, and gently rub with a soft cloth. In this way, you remove any dirt and restore the leather to its original state.
Cleaning all hard objects1
Clean the dashboard, radio knobs, steering wheel, gear lever, and arm rests with a soft cloth and an appropriate cleaning product. An ordinary household cleaning product will be sufficient for wood or plastic panelling. A toothbrush will do the job for places that are difficult to get to, such as air conditioning vents.
What products should you have in your car? 1
A drop stop is an item you can wedge between your front seats to prevent your cell phone, money, and other items from falling into that dark space you usually cannot get to easily. It saves you from trying to clean in those dark crevices. A readily available microfibre cloth will help wipe up those spillages immediately and remove stains and streaks on the upholstery. A high-quality deodoriser or some cleaning agents used for the washing machine will remove that musty smell. Remember that you may be accustomed to your car’s interior smell, but not others.
