Westrand District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana led the multidisciplinery team of Operation Shanela on 09 November 2023 at Mohlakeng and Randfonteing policing areas.
The team comprised of different law enforcement agencies such as Immigration attached to Department of Home Affairs, Department of Correctional Service, Rand West Traffic, Crime Prevention Wardens together with ward councillors and private security companies under the umbrella of the Eyes and Ears (E2) project.
During the operation a roadblock was staged at R14 Brandvlei crossing while other groups conducted disruptive activities on illegal mining areas and on R28, N12 and P111 roads which are known for hijackings,
About 63 people were arrested during the operation for drug related offences, illegal mining and undocumented persons including wanted suspects for various crimes.
A total of 26 fines to the value of more than R16 000-00 were issued for contravening the Road Traffic Act, while the group conducting compliance inspections at second hand goods dealers issued fines to the value of R1500.00 for not appointing a manager and another for Contravention of the Pharmaceutical Act.
The operation also resulted in the confiscation of a toy gun, eight generators, two water pumps, 79 various illicit and counterfeit goods, gold bearing material, mandrax tablets and crystal meth drugs.
All suspects arrested during the operation will appear before the Randfontein Magistrates’ court soon facing different charges.
The Westrand District Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana expressed his gratitude and thanked everyone who contributed to the successes of the operation.
