The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) continues the progress made in the ongoing enforcement against driving under the influence of alcohol.
From 05 August to 11 August 2024, JMPD officers conducted a series of proactive patrols, responded to various complaints, and implemented targeted roadblocks across the city. During this period, a total of 79 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The JMPD would like to emphasize that these operations are a crucial part of our commitment to ensuring and promoting road safety in Johannesburg. The dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol cannot be overstated. Impaired driving not only jeopardizes the lives of the drivers but also poses a significant risk to passengers, other road users, and pedestrians.
Driving under the influence of alcohol can lead to severe consequences, including collisions, injuries, fatalities, and legal repercussions that can affect an individual’s future. The JMPD remains steadfast in our belief that safer roads are the collective responsibility of every member of our community.
We urge all motorists to be mindful of their actions and to avoid drinking and driving. If you plan to consume alcohol, please make use of alternative transportation options such as designated drivers, taxis, or ride-sharing services.
The JMPD will continue to carry out regular checks and enforcement campaigns to deter and apprehend offenders who threaten the safety of our roads.
