The South African Police Service in the province have noted with concern the number of cases reported relating to theft from and of motor vehicles. In response, the police are urging motorists to take proactive steps to prevent such crimes.
The most effective way to deal with theft out of or from vehicles is through prevention. Whether your vehicle is moving or stationary, please consider the following safety tips to protect yourself and your belongings:
- Always lock your doors and close all windows, even when driving.
- Thieves often steal handbags, cellphones, and other valuables by opening unlocked doors or breaking windows-especially when vehicles are stationary at traffic lights or caught in slow-moving traffic.
- Do not leave valuables in plain sight. Store items such as handbags and electronics in the boot or behind the seat if you are driving a bakkie.
- Remain alert and watchful for suspicious individuals, particularly at intersections. Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
- When approaching a red traffic light at night, reduce speed so that you reach the intersection as the light turns green, minimizing the need to stop.
- Be cautious of people standing near intersections. Criminals may blend in with others and use distraction tactics, such as pointing to a supposed issue with your car, to get you to lower your guard.
- Never open your windows or doors to strangers.
- If you come across road obstructions such as rocks or tyres, do not exit your vehicle. Rather, reverse and drive away in the opposite direction.
- Avoid parking in secluded areas. Use attended or secure parking lots whenever possible.
- Always park in well-lit areas at night.
- Stay aware of your surroundings at all times when inside your vehicle. Sleeping in a stationary vehicle poses serious risks.
- Never leave children unattended in a vehicle, even briefly. Besides exposing them to potential danger, they may unknowingly allow access to your vehicle.
- The SAPS once again appeals to the public to report criminality to the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or alternatively via the MySAPS App.
