Confiscating illegal firearms helps make our communities safer by reducing the potential for violent crimes. It’s a positive step towards promoting public safety and protecting innocent lives therefore police in the Nelson Mandela district has left no stone unturned in eradicating illegal firearms and arresting suspects and confiscated 17 firearms since the beginning of July 2025.
On Monday 14 July 2025 at approximately 09:30, an officer and three members from SAPS Kamesh was conducting foot patrols, when they heard shots fired in the vicinity of Acasia Road, Rosedale. The members proceeded into the direction where the shots were coming from and noticed two [2] suspects coming from Acasia direction Kamesh Road. When the suspects noticed the SAPS members, they tossed the firearms and ran away. SAPS members managed to arrest one suspect (25) and found two (2) firearms in Acasia Road, Rosedale. The suspect was arrested on charges of Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
In another unrelated success on Sunday 13/07 at approximately 17:20, the Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combatting Unit were busy with patrols in Motherwell. While patrolling in NU6 Motherwell the members notice a suspicious silver VW Polo standing next to the road. A known suspect walked towards the vehicle and when he noticed the SAPS members, he jumped into the vehicle and sped off. The suspect was driving recklessly and bumped into the SAPS vehicle. The driver stopped the vehicle and attempted to fled on foot but was apprehended. During the search of the suspect members found a Star 9mm pistol with serial number filed off and eight rounds of ammunition.
The suspect (34) was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of prohibited firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Both suspects will appear in their respective magistrate court during the week.
During other crime prevention operation from the 1st of July 2025, 14 more firearms was recovered, and suspects was arrested. All the arrested suspects did appear in their respective courts. The confiscated firearms will be sent to ballistics for analysis.
