Police members recovered two firearms and ammunition in isolated incidents and detained two suspects when they were unable to produce a valid license to possess the firearms and ammunition.
Mfuleni Crime Prevention unit were busy with stop and search operations in Wesbank on Friday 18 July 2025, when community members alerted them about a known gang member who fired gunshots in Smokey Street. The members requested assistance after which they visited an address in Waterberry Street. The person of interest opened the door and fled when he saw the police members. The members gave chase, searched him and found a firearm with ammunition in his possession. Members detained the 28-year-old man for the unlawful possession of a firearm ammunition.
In an unrelated intervention, police members of Operation Shanela were busy with crime combatting initiatives on Saturday 19 July 2025 in Old Crossroads, Nyanga, when they noticed a suspicious man and followed him to an address in Rolihlahla Road upon which a search ensued. Members detained the 35-year-old man when he was found in possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Once charged, the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Blue Downs and Athlone Magistrate’s Courts on the mentioned charges.
