Police in the Western Cape were hard at work over the weekend during operations that led to several arrests for the illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and drugs.
On Sunday, 10 August 2025, members of the Steenberg Crime Prevention Unit acted on information about a male walking with a firearm in Albertus Court, Steenberg. The suspect, matching the description, fled when he saw the police vehicle. Officers gave chase, apprehended him, and found a 9mm pistol with ammunition in his possession. The 19-year-old suspect faces charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
In an unrelated incident, members of Philippi SAPS arrested a 25-year-old man in Hanover Park during crime prevention patrols to combat gang violence. He was found in possession of a .38 Special revolver with ammunition and detained on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, 9 August 2025, members of the Public Order Police arrested a 22-year-old man during stop-and-search operations in Petunia Street, Strand. He was found in possession of 13 mandrax tablets, 26 plastic packets containing crystal meth, and five half mandrax tablets. The same team also arrested a 27-year-old man in Petunia Street after finding 39 units of cocaine in his possession.
In Heideveld on Saturday, members of the Maitland Flying Squad responded to the sound of gunshots. They saw four men jump into a vehicle and flee. Officers pursued, stopped, and searched the vehicle, recovering a 9mm pistol with ammunition. The four suspects face charges under the Firearms Control Act.
Later the same day, the Maitland Flying Squad arrested a 19-year-old male in Old Paarl Road, Kraaifontein, after finding him in possession of 40 rounds of ammunition during stop-and-search operations.
All suspects will appear in the Wynberg, Athlone, Strand, and Kuilsriver Magistrates’ Courts once they have been charged.
