A baby is in a critical condition and another five people have sustained serious injuries after the bakkie they were travelling in rolled on the N3 south bound near the rest bed in the vicinity of Peter Brown on ramp.
ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find a bakkie lying on its side in the middle of the road. A one year old baby was lying a few meters away from the scene, with severe traumatic injuries to the arm. Advanced Life Support intervention was performed on the baby to try and help save the arm. The baby was transported to Grey’s Hospital in a critical condition.
Nine people were in the bakkie, of which only five required medical treatment. They were treated for multiple lacerations as well possible neck and back injuries. The patients were placed on specialised equipment and received a drip for fluid intake, in case of any severe blood loss or internal injuries.
They were all stabilised on scene and transported to various hospitals for further medical care.
It is believed that the driver may have suffered mechanical problems with his bakkie while coming down the hill. This caused him to lose control and roll several time before coming to a halt on the freeway.
The necessary authorities were on the scene and would be investigating the incident.
