The 12th Global Level Crossing Symposium will take place in London, in October 2012. The call for papers addressing a variety of topics which are listed below has now gone out and can be seen on the web site.
Purpose of GLX
The GLXS is held every two years. The event provides an opportunity for people with responsibility in road and rail safety management and operation, research, regulation, enforcement and accident investigation to share experience and good practice for improving safety at level crossings.
One attraction of this event is the mix of both highway and railway professionals who attend from all over the world. This offers the opportunity for thought provoking and challenging discussions.
Theme of the Symposium
Many organisations and groups are involved in safety management at level crossings, including railway companies, road authorities, local communities, and users. These groups all need to be aware of the particular interfaces between themselves and others. They all need to work together to achieve a high degree of safety at the road-rail interface.
The theme of the 12th Symposium will be ‘Working together to improve safety and performance at level crossings’ The event in London will also consider trespass on the railway, accessed from level crossings, as an additional safety issue. We would welcome contributions from experts in highway design and safety, police and other emergency services.

Submit your proposal for a paper
If you want to present a paper at the symposium, please submit your idea, using the website at http://www.levelcrossing2012.org/papers/Pages/Call-for-papers.aspx
Proposals submitted by the deadline date will be reviewed by the International Steering Committee who will select the papers for presentation at the symposium. The committee will have particular consideration to
– How the submissions meet the purpose of the symposium and address the theme and topics,
– The originality of the paper,
– New ideas incorporated.
The committee will also try to get a fair geographical balance among the papers.
