A VW Polo that was involved in a hit and run on Edmund Morewood Road in Tongaat was recovered by Reaction Officers following a high speed chase a short while ago.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene after a man believed to be in his forties was found lying in the roadway. The pedestrian suffered severe injuries which included a partial amputaion to his left leg and a head injury. Paramedics stabilised him on scene before transporting him to Osindisweni Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The vehicle responsible for knocking down the pedestrian had fled the scene and was being followed by a member of the public. Reaction Officers received information that the vehicle invovled was a VW Polo which was travelling in the direction of Flamingo Heights.
While on patrol in the area Reaction Officers Claude Munien & Praveshan Reddy noticed a vehicle matching the description driving erratically. RUSA Members attempted to stop the vehicle however the driver sped off and blew out his front tyres while making his getaway. The driver abandoned the VW Polo outside a block of flats before he fled leaving his passenger behind in the vehicle.
Officers secured the vehicle and the passenger who was under the influence of alcohol. A search was conducted for the driver however he managed to flee through the block of flats.
The vehicle and the intoxicated passenger were handed over to Police for further investigation.
