A 24-year-old male was arrested after he was found in possession of counterfeit R200 notes in the Verulam CBD – KZN.
The suspect approached a female shopper at a supermarket requesting assistance to change an R200 note for smaller demonstrations. The female realised that the R200 note was counterfeit and sought assistance from a RUSA Member who was on patrol. The suspect fled on foot but was apprehended after a brief chase. He was found in possession of four other counterfeit R200 notes.
During an interview, he informed Reaction Officers that the fake notes were handed over to him by a female he met in the Central Business District (CBD). They agreed that he would be paid R50 for every counterfeit note he managed to change to smaller legal denominations. The suspect was unable to provide details regarding his accomplice.
He was placed under arrest and handed over to the Verulam SAPS for further investigation.
