Operation Shanela, the multi-disciplinary high density operation which commenced on Monday, 19 June 2023 and ended on Sunday, 25 June 2023 with emphasis on the reduction of contact and violent crimes and property related crimes in hotspot areas across the province nets a multitude of successes.
Disruptive actions and police activities executed during the operations included, vehicle check points (VCP’s), stop and searches, foot and vehicle patrols, proliferation of illegal firearms, tracing of wanted suspects, stock theft, compliance inspections, drug trafficking and other commodities smuggling.
Thirty five VCP’s and nine roadblocks were held across the province during which 1 875 vehicles and 4 428 persons were stopped and searched.
Seven hundred and ten (710) compliance inspections were executed at second-hand dealers, liquor premises, formal and informal businesses as well as farm visits.
Senior managers and officers led the operations which seen intensified police visibility at shopping malls and complexes, taxi ranks and central business districts throughout the province.
Numerous operational successes were achieved including: 139 suspects were apprehended and arrested for an array of offences such as murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, dealing and possession of drugs and undocumented immigrants were also detained.
Police actions also resulted in the seizure of dagga worth over R3 million rand at the Nakop border post, which resulted in the arrest of 1 truck driver for drug trafficking.
Twenty one (21) wanted suspects were traced and brought to book for evading court appearances and contravention of court orders.
Police confiscated a number of alcoholic beverages, drugs, stolen equipment, recovered stolen vehicles and cash that is believed to be the proceeds of crime.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele commended the efforts of all involved and encouraged the public to keep on assisting the police by reporting all criminal activities. We will continue to put more boots on the ground in an effort to reclaim our communities from criminals and restore the trust of the public in the police.
