The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Freeway and Overloads Control Unit Officers on patrol, apprehended a thirty (30)-year old male hijacker and the robbed sedan, recovered in the Windmill Park area.
It is alleged that; an Uber driver received a request for a trip from Elsburg to Windmill Park. Upon arrival, the driver picked up two (2) potential male commuters, at the said location and proceeded to Windmill Park area.
As they approached Cameroon street, the two (2) passengers pointed the driver with a firearm, also brandishing the knife, instructing him to pull over, as they were forcefully taking the white KIA Pegas sedan.
The trembling and shocked driver, stopped on the sidewalk and got out. In a split second, he immediately spotted patrolling branded EMPD vehicles and called out for help.
Officers jumped into action and the robbed sedan with two (2) male occupants, was followed. The speeding KIA, came to a halt on Aspen street and one suspect, in possession of the firearm, alighted and ran on foot, leaving his eighteen (18)-year old accomplice behind. A brown and silver hunting knife, was confiscated.
The apprehended suspect facing charges of ‘possession of the dangerous weapon and possession of the robbed/hijacked vehicle’ was marched to the Dawn Park police station and he is expected, to appear at the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court soon.
