The South African Police Service in Thabazimbi led by Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Maluleke, conducted a food safety awareness campaign including monitoring of local businesses through compliance inspections at Regorogile location and Thabazimbi town on Monday, 30 October 2023.
The campaign comprised of external stakeholders such as Thabazimbi Local Municipality Mayor Councillor, Judith Motsei, Municipal Officers, officials from the Department of Home Affairs and Department of Health.
The purpose of the campaign was to remove expired food from shelves as it is harmful to the consumers especially children in particular.
During the inspection at some shops, expired food items were found on the shelves. The owners were issued with written notices to appear in court for Foodstuffs Act 54 of 1972. Reg 2(1)(D)) for selling expired goods.
Lastly, the confiscated expired food were destroyed at Thabazimbi landfill site.
The local Mayor appreciated the collaborative efforts made by all law enforcement agencies.
