On Tuesday night, 28 October 2025, members from the Provincial Task Team working under #OperationShanela recovered a vehicle soon after it had been hijacked in the Umlazi policing precinct.
A report of a hijacking which occurred at uMlazi on M35 was relayed to the Provincial Task Team members. Soon afterwards, police officers saturated the area, conducting patrols trying to locate the hijacked vehicle. A white Toyota bakkie was spotted at uMlazi area, and as soon as the occupants in the hijacked vehicle noticed the police, they sped away. A chase ensued toward Philani Valley, when the suspects realized that the police were not giving up on the chase, they started firing several shots towards the pursuing members who also returned fire.
The chase continued to Folweni township where the suspects eventually left the hijacked vehicle and fled on foot. The hijacked vehicle was successfully recovered, inside the vehicle police found two rounds of ammunition. Police members were not injured during the shootout with the suspects. A case of attempted murder on police was registered at Folweni police station, a manhunt is underway for the suspects. #TrioCrimes
