On Sunday, 15 June 2025, members attached to Anti-Gang Unit conducted an intelligence driven operation in the Delft Area focusing on the confiscation of illegal firearms and tracing of wanted persons.
The team proceeded on foot to an identified residence, following up on information regarding a male being in possession of firearms that was used in the commission of an offence. Upon arrival at the premises in Bagzane Street, N2 Gateway, a thorough search was conducted, leading to the discovery of a firearm, hidden in a cupboard in the bedroom. A P38 9mm pistol with two 9mm rounds of ammunition was confiscated as exhibits.
A 24-year-old male was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He faces an additional charge of attempted murder on a Delft case which occurred earlier in the month.
The members proceeded to a premises in Mandara Street, N2 Gateway and again conducted a thorough search of the premises. A 44-year-old male was found in possession of a rifle with no serial number, an extended magazine and 50 different calibre rounds of ammunition. The suspect was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
During the tracing operation, the members proceeded to another premises in Mulanje Street, N2 where they searched the separate entrances on the premises and found and confiscated a .38 Special revolver with serial number filed off as three x .38 Special rounds of ammunition, 277 whole mandrax tablets, 252 sachets containing tik and well as a sachets containing cocaine. No one was on this premises.
The suspects were detained at Delft SAPS and are due to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ court on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, on their respective charges.
In an unrelated matter, at 09:30, POPS members posted in Lwandle area were involved in a shooting incident in Mamampondo Street Lwandle next to block 33.
According to reports, while patrolling in Lwandle area, the members received information from community about four males robbing people in the area. They directed the members towards a suspect dressed in a white t-shirt and black trouser, allegedly carrying a firearm. When the members confronted the group in the mentioned street, they all ran away.
The members chased the suspect with the white t-shirt, who turned around and pointed the members with a firearm. The members warned him to put down the firearm but he refused.
POPS member opened fire, where after the suspect ran and disappeared between the shacks without a trace.
When members arrived at Llwandle SAPS to administer the cases, reports came through from the community of a person with a gunshot wound to the leg. The individual was taken to the local hospital by his family, where after a case of attempted murder was opened by them.
This matter will be referred to IPID for further investigation.
