A 53-year-old man was killed and two other people were injured after the bakkie they were traveling in knocked into a cow on the southbound lane of the R102 between the Canelands and King Shaka International Airport intersection this morning.
At approximately 05:24 Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by a passing motorist reporting the incident. Upon arrival a Nissan bakkie was found on the northbound lane.
The driver suffered life-threatening injuries and died on scene while his wife was seriously injured. A second passenger was also injured. Medics from the Provincial Ambulance Service as well as a private ambulance service stabilised the injured on scene before transporting them to hospital.
It is alleged that the occupants of the bakkie are employed at a bakery in Stanger – KZN. They were on their way to do a delivery when the driver knocked into the cow. The bakkie veered from the southbound lane across the northbound lane before crashing into an embankment.
The cow was also killed in the accident.
