- James Ndulula Primary School receives much-needed donation
- Kicking for a Cause Competition brings in over R35 000 for Uitenhage School
During the 2017 Volkswagen Junior Masters soccer tournament at the University of Witwatersrand (WITS) in December 2017, a ‘Kicking for a Cause’ goal board was set up where a goal was more than just a number on the scoreboard – it was a donation towards a worthy cause.
The soccer tournament, which comprised teams sponsored by Volkswagen Dealerships from around the country, saw 16 teams consisting of nine u/12 boys contesting the championship in a knockout format. The tournament plays a key role in the development of soccer, showcasing the talent and skills of young soccer players in South Africa.
The ‘Kicking for a Cause’ goal competition aimed to ensure that Volkswagen South Africa’s passion for “the beautiful game” was not limited to the soccer field at WITS but also extended to deserving communities. This was a fun and interactive way of getting parents, kids and supporters attending the tournament involved in the nurturing of future soccer stars who have all the talent but are in need of the essential soccer kits to succeed. For every goal scored, Volkswagen South Africa donated R500 to the cause; so with 71 goals scored, R35 500 was donated to the James Ndulula School in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape on Thursday, 26 April.
“Uitenhage is Volkswagen South Africa’s home and it is imperative that we’d want to make a positive and tangible impact by giving back to the community in which we operate. The education and development of young people in our communities is a strong focus for Volkswagen and through initiatives such as these, we hope to continue to strengthen the relationship between ourselves and our community,” says Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa
