Two suspects were arrested and guns and ammunition taken off the streets in the District of Mangaung Metro during Operation Shanela.
A team made up of Visible Policing Unit and Public Order Police Unit members were busy with the execution of various operational concepts in Wepener area on Saturday, 11 November 2023. A Vehicle Check Point was assembled at the corner of De Beer and Spies Streets as part of cross-border crime prevention activity. At about 21:30 the members stopped a Black Mercedes Benz CL63 AMG and conducted a search. Firstly, an empty firearm magazine was found inside the trousers pocket.
A further search was done on the vehicle and a Glock 9mm pistol with a filed off serial number, three (3) magazines loaded with ammunition, two (2) lose 5.56mm R5 live rounds and three (3) 12 gauge shotgun rounds were found. Twenty-one (21) hollow point and sixty-four bullets were seized. The 37 year old male from Woodlands in Bloemfontein was then arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The policing actions continued in the District and a team received a tip-off from the community on Sunday, 12 November 2023. The information was followed up and members arrived at Bultfontein Zone 4 in Selosesha policing precinct at about 13:30.
The house was searched, and hundred-and-seventy-two (172) live ammunition were found inside a brief case with military colours. A suspected stolen Black Panasonic RX26 video camera was also seized. The 41-year-old male was arrested for illegal possession of ammunition and Possession of presumably stolen property.
Cases were opened at Wepener and Selosesha Police Stations. The suspects will appear in Court soon.
