A 30-year-old suspect was apprehended by a car guard this morning (Monday) following an attempted robbery on Moss Street in the Verulam CBD – KZN.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived on the scene and were informed that two suspects attempted to rob a pedestrian of his bag and belongings. The victim sought assistance at a nearby shop. He defended himself as the suspects, armed with knives, attempted to stab him. The robbers fled empty handed. The victim declined to register a criminal case.
A car guard who witnessed the incident pursued the suspects and managed to apprehend one of them, bringing him back to the scene. The suspect has previously been arrested by Reaction Officers for robberies in the Central Business District (CBD) and was released from prison two weeks ago.
He is believed to be linked to a gang operating in the area who prey on pedestrians. Stolen goods are sold and the proceeds of the sale are used to purchase drugs.
Reaction Officers attempted to locate complainants from previous robberies but were unable to obtain the case numbers required to detain the suspect.
