Yesterday afternoon, a group of suspects arrived at a vehicle dealership in Umhlanga, where they allegedly conspired with an employee to unlawfully drive away with a brand-new Hyundai i20.
The vehicle was later reported stolen, and the registration details of the vehicle used during the commission of the crime were circulated.
Crime Intelligence gathered information regarding the suspects wanted for the theft of the motor vehicle. Acting swiftly, the Durban Metro Police Service Drug Team (SOD1), working in close coordination with various private security companies, intercepted the suspect vehicle in the Morningside area. Four suspects were arrested on the scene.
Further intelligence led officers to a residence in Phoenix, where the stolen Hyundai i20 was found concealed. An additional suspect was apprehended at the premises, and the vehicle was recovered.
In total, five suspects were arrested and charged for possession of suspected stolen property (Section 36). Both vehicles involved were seized and booked as exhibits.
