The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) conducted a series of operations targeting drunk drivers and reckless driving over the weekend from Friday, to Sunday, 14 December 2025. A total of 88 individuals were arrested, with 55 motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol and 33 pedestrians caught on highways, particularly the N1 and N4.
The arrests were made by regional policing members in Centurion, Cullinan and Mamelodi. Drunk driving poses a significant risk to road safety, and it endangers not only the driver and passengers, but also other road users. It may lead to accidents, injuries and even fatalities. It is crucial for motorists to understand the dangers of drunk driving and to make responsible choices or face arrest.
In a separate operation in Hatfield, the TMPD Public Transport Unit impounded 13 minibuses that were operating without the necessary documentation. Some drivers were found to be driving without driving licences or professional driving permits, which is a violation of the National Land Transport Act, 2009 (Act 5 of 2009). Public transport operators must comply with the regulations or risk their vehicles being impounded.
The TMPD is intensifying its efforts to enforce road traffic laws by conducting regular roadblocks and stop-and-search operations as well as deploying more resources for visible policing in order to promote road safety and responsible driving behaviour. Pedestrians should use designated sidewalks and crossings to ensure their safety and that of others.
The Chief of Police, Commissioner YCR Faro, urges motorists to use alternative means of transportation when intoxicated or face spending the holidays in the holding cells. She also applauds officers for their tireless efforts in combating lawlessness in Tshwane.
