Swift response to information about illegal activities at a premises in Hartenbos near Mossel Bay led to the confiscation of two unlicensed firearms during a crime combating operation.
On Tuesday, 20 January 2026, at about 18:00, Da Gamaskop police members conducted an operation during which they confiscated a .22 rifle found in the possession of a man. The police arrested the man on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.
Later the same day (20 January 2026), further investigation into the confiscation led police to a premises in Herbst Street, Hartenbos. A search of the premises resulted in the discovery of a shotgun, a firearm barrel, and two rounds of ammunition. The members confiscated the items and arrested a 77-year-old man on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Both suspects remain in police custody and are expected to make their first court appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 22 January 2026, on the mentioned charges.
