New traffic signals have been installed at the intersection of Old Oak Road and Melina Street to improve road safety, traffic flow and provide a safer crossing for pedestrians.
The traffic signals and road signs were installed as part of a Service Agreement between the City and the WCB group, which is currently developing residential apartments adjacent to Old Oak Road, close to Melina Street. This new signalised intersection will help accommodate the development in this vicinity.
“We welcome the new signalised intersection. This is a busy corridor that carries significant volumes of traffic throughout the day. Residents have raised concerns about the challenges pedestrians and motorists face when trying to cross Old Oak Road safely from Melina Street before. The installation of these new traffic lights will therefore provide a much safer and more controlled crossing opportunity for pedestrians, while also improving traffic flow and safety for all road users. Service agreements such as these demonstrate the City’s commitment to creating safer, more accessible streets for our communities, which helps to keep Cape Town moving safely,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
