In their ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of unlicensed, prohibited, and illegal firearms, which are often used in the commission of serious and violent crimes, OR Tambo police arrested four male suspects, aged between 23 and 64, for possession of prohibited homemade firearms in Ngqeleni and Port St John’s during separate operations conducted between the evening of Monday, 09 March 2026, and the morning of Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
At Poza locality, Mamolweni A/A in Ngqeleni, a 64-year-old man was found in possession of a shotgun under his bed by Ngqeleni Crime Prevention members on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, at approximately 00:30.
In a second incident, still in Ngqeleni at Nothintsila A/A – Goli locality, a 23-year-old male suspect was found in possession of a prohibited shotgun inside a steel trunk in his room on Monday, 09 March 2026, at around 23:45.
In an unrelated operation in Port St John’s, a 43-year-old male suspect from Bolani locality was arrested by Port St John’s Crime Intelligence members, working with the Zone 4 District Task Team. He was found in possession of two homemade shotguns with six (06) live rounds of ammunition. In the same locality, a 58-year-old man was also arrested for possession of a homemade shotgun with fourteen live rounds.
All arrested suspects were charged with unlawful possession of prohibited firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition. They are scheduled to appear in the Magistrates’ Courts of their respective jurisdictions soon.
