A male suspect was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit for the possession of a hijacked Joburg Water bakkie in the Johannesburg Inner City.
On Tuesday morning, 13 June 2023, officers received a lookout for an Isuzu bakkie belonging to Joburg Water that was hijacked. The last tracking signal of the vehicle was in Lenasia South where the tracking device was recovered but the vehicle was not at the coordinates.
Whilst patrolling along the M2 East Freeway near the Village Road off-ramp in Selby, officers spotted the said hijacked vehicle driving past them and it still had the original registration number displayed.
The officers stopped the vehicle which had one occupant. They approached the male driver and asked him where he got the vehicle. The driver alleged that he received the vehicle from someone in Soweto, who had asked him to go change the brake pads. The driver who claims to be a mechanic further alluded that he was heading to Daveyton.
The suspect was immediately arrested and detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS. The vehicle was seized and booked in at the SAPS Aeroton pound.
