Police in Mpumalanga arrested two male Zimbabwean nationals for possesion of explosives in Barberton on Sunday, 28 September 2025.
The arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation conducted at a guest house in New Village, Barberton, where police discovered a large quantity of explosives concealed in a luggage bag in one of the rooms. The suspects failed to provide a valid explanation regarding the possession of the items and were immediately apprehended.
Members from the Explosives Unit responded to the scene and rendered it safe. The exhibits were secured for further forensic analysis. Preliminary information suggests that the explosives may have been intended for use in illegal mining activities.
Both suspects, aged 29 and 33, are expected to appear before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court soon on charges relating to the Contravention of Section 6(1) and Section 28(1) of the Explosives Act, Act 26 of 1956.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga has welcomed the arrest and commended the collaborative efforts of Crime Intelligence, Public Order Policing, and the Explosives Unit in ensuring that such dangerous items are removed from society.
