FREE STATE – Senekal police have arrested two suspects aged 38 and 42 from Matwabeng after they were found in possession of 15 sheep suspected to be stolen.
The arrests were effected in the early hours of Saturday at approximately 03:30 during routine crime prevention duties conducted by the Senekal Rural Safety Coordinator together with the Crime Prevention Team. The operations were intensified to curb stock theft, which is prevalent during the festive season.
During patrols in and around Senekal, police noticed a grey VW Caravelle microbus with Free State registration plates travelling at high speed. The driver attempted to evade police, prompting a chase. The vehicle was eventually stopped and searched.
Upon inspection, police discovered 15 sheep tied with wire inside the vehicle. The two occupants were immediately arrested. Preliminary investigations were conducted to establish the original crime scene, which led police to a farm within the Senekal district. The lawful owner of the sheep positively identified the recovered livestock as his property.
The vehicle used in the commission of the crime was seized as an exhibit.
The two suspects are expected to appear before the Senekal Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 December 2025, facing a charge of possession of suspected stolen property.
The SAPS commends the members for their proactive policing and commitment to protecting the property of citizens, in line with the South African Constitution and police mandate. Community members are urged to refrain from buying stolen property and to report any suspicious activities to the police.
