Recent road accident fatalities in the Northern Cape are cause for concern, thus it is against this backdrop that the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape urges all road users to exercise maximum caution when travelling during the festive season in order to prevent road fatalities and injuries.
Motorists are encouraged to adhere to the following road safety precautions to ensure the safety of all road users:
1. Ensure that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
2. Check that tyres have sufficient tread and are inflated to the correct pressure.
3. Inspect brake pads and braking systems for wear and functionality.
4. Test all lights and windscreen wipers, as visibility is critical.
5. Adhere to speed limits and adjust driving behaviour according to weather conditions.
6. Avoid driver fatigue by resting at least every two hours.
7. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
8. Share the road responsibly with all road users, including cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.
9. Avoid overtaking in unsafe or prohibited areas.
The South African Police Service remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users during the festive season and beyond.
