A 35-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint while on her way to board a taxi in Coniston, KwaZulu-Natal today (Monday).
According to the victim, she was approached by an unknown male suspect described as short and dark in complexion, with traditional facial cuts, red lips, and a plaster on his nose. The suspect was wearing dark blue pants, a grey T-shirt, and a black round hat, and was carrying a backpack.
The suspect produced a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and demanded her valuables before fleeing the scene with the victim’s grey Huawei cellphone. The exact model of the cellphone could not be confirmed.
A male witness came to the assistance of the victim and pursued the suspect on foot. During the chase, the robber turned and pointed the firearm at the witness, causing the man to abandon the pursuit. The perpetrator then fled into nearby bushes.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene. Upon arrival, an extensive search of the surrounding area was conducted, however, the suspect could not be located.
The victim declined to immediately register a criminal case.
