The body of 23 year old Lungani Ngobeni who drowned after he was swept off a flooded bridge on Saturday (13/01/2024) was located in Barrs Flats – KZN.
Two boys made the discovery while fishing in the Umdloti River near the Polo Grounds in Barrs Flats – KZN. They sought assistance from a nearby resident who contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for assistance.
Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched and arrived on scene. Officers were led to a riverbank where the body of a male was located. Ngobeni’s family were present and confirmed his identity.
Ngobeni and a friend were attempting to traverse a flooded bridge in Mhlasini – KZN during torrential rains last weekend. The deceased was swept off the bridge and could not be located since.
On Monday, the RUSA Robinson R44 Helicopter conducted a low level flight over the river in an attempt to recover his body but water levels were high, resulting in the search being postponed.
