The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, vehemently condemns the recent outbreak of taxi violence in Masemola policing area, Sekhukhune district that has resulted in 13 taxis being damaged and left some taxi drivers seriously wounded.
In the wake of these deplorable incidents, swift and decisive action has been taken by the law enforcement agencies, and eight suspects aged between 30 and 63 have been apprehended in connection with the incident on Thursday, 09 May 2024.
The incident took place on Monday, 06 May 2024, in GaMasemola, Apel Cross along R579, after violence erupted between members affiliated to two Taxi Associations. One group allegedly attacked the other with stones, damaging 13 taxis. The members of the other group retaliated and threw stones back, and left three people seriously injured.
The Provincial Commissioner extends her gratitude to the dedicated officers involved in these operations and urges the public to continue cooperating with the police to prevent further escalation of violence.
“We will spare no effort in bringing those responsible for instigating chaos to justice,” added Lieutenant General Hadebe.
A total of five suspects were charged with malicious damage to property and three with assault GBH. All suspects will appear before Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 10 May 2024.
Police investigations are still continuing.
