A woman was scammed by two men at the an ATM on Wick Street in the Verulam CBD – KZN, earlier today (Sunday).
The victim informed members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) that she had been sent by her mother to withdraw cash. Upon arriving at the ATM, she noticed two men standing nearby.
One of the suspects pretended to be using the machine. When the woman attempted to use the second ATM, the suspect told her it was not working and instructed her to use the same machine he was using.
As she inserted her card, the male grabbed it under the guise of assisting her. He tapped the card on the ATM before inserting it and then told her to enter the PIN. When she requested privacy, both men suddenly fled.
Her attempts to continue the transaction were unsuccessful, and when she tried to cancel and retrieve her card, it failed to eject. She contacted her mother, who then received a notification that R1 300 had been withdrawn from her account. The victim was advised to return home so they could block the card immediately.
The public is urged to remain vigilant when using ATMs, as scams of this nature are common and continuing to increase.
