A 43-year-old man believed to be linked to a used parts theft syndicate was apprehended by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) today (Monday).
Reaction Officers were dispatched after receiving a tip-off regarding a Theft In Progress at a used car parts business situated on the North Coast of Durban in the Ethekwini District – KZN. Officers entered the premises where an extensive search was conducted. One (1) suspect was located and apprehended.
During questioning, it was established that the suspect was allegedly operating in collaboration with Vehicle Theft Syndicates. WhatsApp conversations recovered on his cellphone revealed orders for high-end vehicle components including engine parts and computer boxes. He was also found in possession of a bag of tools believed to be used in stripping vehicles.
It is believed that the suspect intended to strip engines, gearboxes, computer boxes, and other valuable components from luxury vehicles, which would then be supplied to criminals associated with vehicle theft operations.
It could not be confirmed whether a getaway vehicle was in the vicinity when Reaction Officers converged on the premises.
The suspect has been detained at Verulam SAPS in KZN for further investigation.
