As part of the ongoing Festive Season Operation, the multidisciplinary team conducted operations at Naas in the Tonga area on Friday, 12 December 2025, thereby arresting two suspects aged 35 and 40 after mishandling firearms at a funeral.
The operation was aimed at preventing and combating crime in certain identified areas during the festive season. Tonga Crime Intelligence received information that members of a certain group, suspected of terrorising members of the community of Naas and surrounding areas, would be discharging firearms during the burial of one of their fellows.
Through Crime Intelligence information, members were strategically tasked to observe this illegal and unruly behaviour that could endanger the lives of innocent people during the funeral.
The operational team members swiftly moved in and observed the discharging of firearms by suspects during the burial at the cemetery. It was during this time that two individuals were identified from separate vehicles. The two were tactically approached, cornered, and then apprehended.
One suspect was arrested with one (01) shotgun and two empty magazines. Although it was discovered that the firearm is licensed, the owner allegedly contravened the Firearms Control Act of South Africa.
The second suspect was found with a 9mm pistol, as well as a magazine and 165 live rounds for a 9mm pistol.
The two suspects were charged accordingly and are expected to appear at the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, 15 December 2025, facing charges relating to the unlawful discharge of a firearm in a public place.
